Ski Hut 19Oct,2009
Thanks to everyone who lugged, hammered and otherwise helped out Saturday, Oct 2nd. Thanks especially to MacIssac Engineering and the Wood Point ATV Club you can see we got a little farther than planned. Will likely do a little more work this coming weekend (10-11 oct).
We plan to haul some building materials into the area of the second bridge on the Crooked Tree Trail this Saturday, the 3rd of October. We will start the first stage in the morning, likely around 10:00, at 26 Squire to load up and then drop off at the Access Road. Then after lunch, say around 1:00 p.m. we will start hauling it from there into the bridge area. If you have gadgets that would be useful in hauling heavy building materials through uneven woods trails bring them along.
If you available for either session let me know or just show up or give a shout Saturday.
See you Saturday. Ross
Ross Thomas is positive that with the Equinox, most of you have been busy waxing skis, gluing tips and planning ski holidays for the past several months. With that in mind, planning has started for a warming hut on the crooked tree trail. An approximate site for this 12’ x 16’ structure has been chosen just before the second bridge and marked with stakes if anyone wants to have a peek.
We are planning a big work party on Saturday, the 3rd of October, with Sunday the 4th being the rain date. This will be to haul in all the lumber, roofing etc. in from the Access Road to the building site. We will need lots of strong backs etc. Also, if someone wants to help but prefers not to do too much lifting and would like to coordinate refreshments let Ross know.
We will also be starting trail cleanup/maintenance work in early October, usually weekend afternoons-more on this to follow.
From Doug, proud father and husband:
This is to let you know that after 78 days on the road that the nomad Sydney arrived home today around one o’clock in the afternoon. She traveled 5,445 km had only one flat and wore out two sets of tires. Diane who joined her just outside Montreal did the last 1,200 km home to Sackville. Both are in high spirits and in great shape.
Melissa Grey is the newly appointed Science & Education Coordinator at the Joggins Fossil Centre. Following some discussions on our Sunday morning rides, Melissa has been looking into routes for biking to Joggins this Fall. The Centre closes at the end of October.
Melissa usually goes straight from Maccan (there’s a fairly large pull out just before the #242 to park cars) to Joggins – a 19km ride one-way. Most of the road is freshly paved and nice to ride. Longer rides from Maccan could include Lower Maccan – River Hebert – Minudie – Joggins (about 44km 1 way) or Maccan – River Hebert – Minudie – Joggins (38km 1 way). There are lots of options. Going through Minudie would be lovely.
So, if a group of cyclists would like to stop in at the Centre, they have toilets, a cafe, and a water fountain. Melissa can also coordinate a special group rate ($5 per person) to people who’d like to check out the gallery. The scenery is really quite lovely here and they have picnic tables outside for people to use and enjoy the view.
If you’re interested in doing a group either to Joggins, Sackville-Joggins return, or a ride from and returning to the Centre, please add your comments below. Put in your preferred dates or day of the week.
The Fundy Biosphere Reserve will be hosting a meeting on July 21, at 7PM at Mount Allison University (Avard-Dixon room 117) to discuss the Fundy Biosphere Trail Initiative.
This trail will build on the UNESCO designation and become a marquee outdoor experience for hikers and bikers, highlighting the natural landscape, culture and history of Fundy Biosphere Reserve. This Trail will be a collaborative initiative of the trail organizations, community groups and municipalities within the Fundy Biosphere Reserve as well as the provincial Trail Council. The Trail will link the communities of St. Martins and Sackville, traveling through the Biosphere Reserve with each section under the jurisdiction of each individual trail council or municipality.
The FBR is seeking public input on this project in hopes of gathering information on potential trail routes from Sackville to Memramcook as well as develop a community stakeholder group to help develop this and other initiatives.
TOC members are strongly encouraged to attend.
The potluck will be this coming Saturday evening, the 21st of February, at 5:30 p.m at Saint Paul’s Anglican Church Hall on Main Street across from the swan pond.
Again if you have gear to swap, sell or give away bring it along. There are a few people looking for kids stuff so it would be really nice to bring any unwanted children’s equipment along.
