Trail Conditions

Monday’s Meanderings

Another promising day. Track remains in good shape, glide will be zippier with older track and warming temps at 2.5-3/4, waxing will get tricky as temps rise late this afternoon so you “After-Workers” will want skins or step skis, which except for a few of the lazy old waxers, is all anyone uses anyway. And a (rare) correction- the previously allude to masseter muscle is used primarily for mastication, which is sort of like chewing. The zygomaticus major is the main smiler, but all of you who were out on the weekend already know that from where you were sore….Thanks to our med student/SLT editor E.Jarvis for outsmarting the old fellow. And as things on the trails get busy I thought we should again raise the specter of *right of way* on the trails. Technically the ascending skier must yield to the descender, but I would qualify this- often the ascender has their head down and is embroiled in the misery of the ascent so it is imperative that the descender yell out to make their presence known. I also feel that the descender still needs to be in control and ideally should also leave the track and generally be prepared to take evasive action. And yes, despite this writers tendency to do the opposite, and my sincerest apologies to those I have offended, both skiers should shift to their* right.* And when overtaking another skier you have the right to call out track or Piste and that skier should get out of your way, but it seems more common and more polite for the passer to notify the passee of there approach and from which side they will be passing, as in “On your Left”. How to do this without scaring the sh*t out of the passee, who is usually engaged in some inner reverie or misery or talking to their headset, I have yet to perfect- suggestions welcome. Enjoy the ups and downs, but don’t forget to “keep your stick on the ice”,
