Bucky reported yesterday that he tracked “the Entire Country” so skiing will be pretty nice today, albeit a bit chilly and quite slow(new cold snow= sharp crystals which are like skiing on sand. Expect glide to be 1-2 so you’ll get a better workout and the hills should be less daunting. Any skis will grip and for the waxers this is a chance to use that rarely seen green -8 to -15. Although there was lots of snow in open areas, there are still sparse areas under the canopy so be a bit wary on hills where skiing outside the track should be safest.
With the cold be sure you are *wearing extra layers*, especially on legs and arms- blood cooling in poorly clad limbs will quickly lead to very cold digits, and be sure if you possess external genitalia they are well insulated- in a pinch a spare mitt or sock stuffed down pants can be useful, and with the cold whatever is in there will be even tinier than usual so even a kids mitt would do. It is a good idea to bring hand/foot warmers and carry an emergency blanket, spare mitts(I would strongly recommend against gloves) and socks. And be sure if you are alone *someone knows* you are skiing and when to expect you back, especially late in the day.
If you are planning on warming up in a cabin remember that once a fire is lit, it will take at least an hour to warm up so best to do this early in your ski, then ski for another while and then go back and enjoy your fire lighting labors. I won’t be out today so if anyone is by Sugar Brook Lodge please consider putting a fire on even if you don’t plan to use it.
But once you are in the woods, the wind will be negligible, the sun almost warming and you may well be doffing layers…Enjoy,
